Our responsibilities

We take our corporate responsibilities very seriously and not just because we’re in the national spotlight. Everyone at the National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) is passionate about safety, sustainability and safeguarding the environment.

We’re very proud of our achievements that include:

  • Meeting all environmental, health and safety targets, as well as returning a strong profit performance, before exceptional items.
  • Achieving the significant milestone of 1.5 million hours worked without an accident.
  • Being awarded the prestigious RoSPA Research & Development Industry Sector Award for the fifth year in a row.

The environment

We believe in leading by example. Our goal is to become a centre of expertise for a safe, secure and sustainable nuclear industry. We aim to address key environmental challenges and help the industry move forward in an environmentally friendly way. Our Environmental Management System identifies the environmental aspects of all our products, services and buildings. Which enables us to understand the impacts and effects of our activities on the environment, so we can manage and control them.

Supporting skills

We’re responsible for protecting nuclear skills and the national nuclear technology capability. Our work in this area focuses on education as we invest in science learning and training. The development of the 3 NNL-managed University Research Alliances goes from strength-to-strength with more than 100 postgraduate, post-doctorate and academics employed across the Alliances. The key focus is research that will ultimately benefit the UK nuclear industry by helping to increase safety and reduce costs.

Smallpiece Trust

We also work with this charitable organisation to support the training of young people in the engineering sector. We recently offered a unique learning experience to a group of 30 teenagers who took part in a 4-day residential nuclear engineering course at Durham University. The course was such a success, a second one has been run in Manchester with more than double the number of young people.
