The National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) – why are we changing?

The creation of the NNL presents many exciting changes and new opportunities for us all. Nuclear power currently equates to around 20% of the UK’s electricity, but our industry is really going to take off, with an estimated 100,000 new jobs being created in the next decade. So, this is an opportunity to be in at the beginning of a new era as nuclear energy shapes the future of power in the UK.

Why has the Government created the NNL?

You can’t fail to notice that nuclear energy is big news. Issues such as going green, cutting emissions, the ‘dash for gas’ and the lack of alternative resources – have all hit the headlines.

There’s no getting away from it. The UK has a strategic need for nuclear power. Which is why the Government has committed to go-ahead with a new generation of nuclear power plants. Not only will nuclear power improve our supply of energy and lessen our reliance on gas, it will help to address climate change by providing clean, secure and affordable energy.

To lead and co-ordinate the R&D programmes that will underpin the future of the industry, the NNL has been created. Building on the success of Nexia Solutions, we’re Government owned and contractor operated. Working collaboratively with a range of partners, we’ll lead the application of world-class science and technology in the field of national and international nuclear energy and associated fuel cycles.

Our purpose:

  • Identify and preserve key nuclear scientific and technical skills and world-class facilities.
  • Lead and integrate the UK's strategic technology programmes.
  • Deliver value for customers through the provision of first-class science-based research and technical solutions to the nuclear market.
  • Provide independent and trusted technical advice to the UK Government and its agencies in support of UK Nuclear Policy development and implementation.
  • Enable the UK Government to influence the development of a safe, secure, environmentally responsible international global nuclear industry.
  • Provide a socio-economic focus funded from our operating surplus.
  • Operate world-class facilities that underpin nuclear research undertaken by UK and international customers.
  • Play a full role in the opening up of the market to competition by providing access to key facilities and skills.
  • Spin out commercial operations to assist in the development of the market for the provision of nuclear research.
